MEAD SCHAEFFER: AN ARTIST'S SCRAPBOOK. In 2020 I wrote a biography of golden age illustrator Mead Schaeffer published by the fine folks at The Illustrated Press. As part of that process, Schaeffer's daughter loaned me his personal scrapbooks. He proudly hand lettered large, heavy volumes where he preserved clippings of every published work.

Mead Schaeffer drove Norman Rockwell crazy. Schaeffer and Rockwell were two of the most famous illustrators for the Post during the Golden Age of illustration. They were close friends and lived next to each other near Arlington, Vermont. Rockwell wrote in his autobiography: Schaeffer and I became fast friends.

A former student of the Pratt Institute—and later Dean Cornwell—Scheaffer illustrated books and magazine covers and stories from the 1920s till his retirement in the late 1970s, producing something over 5000 paintings during his lifetime.
