A report by the Washington Post claims Elon Musk's social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, slowed down access to content on the Reuters and New York Times websites as well as rivals like Bluesky, Facebook and Instagram.

Clicking a link on X to one of the affected websites resulted in a delay of about five seconds before the webpage loaded, the Washington Post reported, citing tests it conducted.

Reuters has also reported a similar delay in tests it ran, before seeing an improvement on Tuesday.

X confirmed with Reuters that the delay was removed, but did not elaborate.

Musk has previously lashed out at news organisations and journalists who have reported critically on his companies, which include Tesla and SpaceX.

X has also previously prevented users from posting links to competing social media platforms.

PM backs down from Matildas public holiday discussions

By Tom Williams

By political reporter Stephanie Borys

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is backing away from his push for a public holiday if the Matildas win the Women's World Cup.

The final decision rests with state and territory leaders, and while some are on board with the idea, others aren't convinced due to the costs on small businesses.

Albanese had previously declared the matter would be discussed at today's national cabinet meeting. But speaking on Triple M Hobart, he now says that's not the case.

"We won't actually be discussing it today, we are discussing housing and other issues," he says.

"It's up to the states and territories what they do. But when the public holiday was held for the memorial day for the Queen, what happened was that a whole range of small businesses went gang busters on that day."

Yesterday, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton called the PM's push for a public holiday a "stunt" and an "ego trip".

North Korea claims detained US soldier 'disillusioned at the inequality of American society'

By Liana Walker

PM backs away from Matildas public holiday push. Catch up with The Loop (8)

North Korea has claimed a US soldier who bolted into the North across the Korean border last month did so after being "disillusioned at the inequality of American society".

Private 2nd Class Travis King entered North Korea while on a tour of the Joint Security Area on the heavily fortified border between the two Koreas, becoming the first American detained in the North in nearly five years.

The North's official Korean Central News Agency said King told investigators he had decided to enter North Korea because he "harbored ill feeling against inhuman maltreatment and racial discrimination within the US Army".

The Pentagon on Tuesday said it could not verify alleged comments made by King that North Korean state media reported, but that Washington remained focused on his safe return.

"The department's priority is to bring Private King home, and that we are working through all available channels to achieve that outcome," a Pentagon spokesperson said.

A statement form the Fulton County court clerk says its website system was being tested before the grand jury voted later in the day on whether to indict Trump on charges of trying to overturn his election defeat.

Reuters reported on the documents after seeing them on the court's public website, but the court released a statement saying the media outlet had obtained a "fictitious" document.

However, the court clerk has released a statement saying the documents were not official because they lacked certain markings.

Matildas fans are being urged to be wary of scammers ahead of tonight's game

By Tom Williams

The national anti-scam centre is warning fraudsters are targeting fans on social media, offering fake ticket sales and fake live-stream links to matches.

The consumer watchdog, the ACCC, is reminding consumers to only buy from authorised ticket sellers, and to double-check a streaming site before entering any payment details to watch the game.

"We are already seeing initial reports of scam activity, particularly on Facebook, where scammers are responding to posts from people looking for tickets and using compromised accounts to sell non-existent tickets," ACCC deputy chair Catriona Lowe says.

"There have also been reports of scammers claiming there is a problem with the payment and asking for it to be made again."
